The Way of the Open Door
Agedo encompasses the following karate areas: * Based on Shotokan Karate, it contains many of the hard, linear movements that exemplify the karate styles * Agedo also contains many elements from the softer styles: turning of another’s energy, energy conservation, strategy and circular movements. * Every technique is practical in application and the bunkai (reasons behind the moves) are taught to make the art a useful part of the student’s abilities. * Agedo also challenges the mental aspects of students: study is involved and books are assigned for reading and to gain knowledge. * “Breaking” challenges the spiritual parts of those in Agedo, and is an integral part of one’s learning – teaching the student to focus, learn to use proper techniques, how to concentrate their energy and how to put aside one’s fears.
Kendo is a Japanese form of fencing with two-handed swords, called katanas. Kendo was originally developed as a safe form of sword training for samurai. Kendo is included in our curriculum, if you choose to attend! Our Kendo classes are safe, fun, and educational. Toyama Ryu is taught, although technically, we do more kenjitsu, because it is a cutting class. However, trying to define the difference confuses folks here: there is not much knowledge of Japanese arts around these parts. So we keep it simple and use “Kendo” as the nomenclature for all the sword art classes that we teach. Students begin with bokken (a wood “practice” sword) and learn classic stances, positions and cuts. After some time (typically at least 6 months to one year) students are introduced to the sword (Katana.) At that time, students begin learning strategy, the history of Japanese Swordsmanship, and culture. This is when students also begin simple “test” cutting. Breaking is also integrated into these classes to help students develop focus, breathing and strength. Forms or “katas” are a base for Kendo classes. Eventually students learn to make their own cutting targets and begin working with bogu and shinai as part of advanced training. Both beginning and advanced kendo students utilize Chanbarra (a state-of-the-art, soft weapon) to practice and hone their skills during a variety of sparring situations. This unique workout is both safe and fun.
What are the Principles and Benefits of Cardio Self-Defense Training? It’s simple: Cardio and Self-Defense! It's like a boot camp to learn self-defense! We sit at computers all day long. Or we sit in our cars driving to and from work. What kind of cardio, REAL cardio, do you get in between home, car, work, car, and home? For most people – not much. And that’s where the CARDIO comes in. The cardio part of this program will help you to increase your stamina, build up your cardio, burn off fat, and make you FIT! And the AWESOME part is that a lot of the cardio is done while you’re doing the self-defense, so you won’t even know you’re working out. You’re TRAINING, learning, burning calories, and having fun. I should know – I lost 38 pounds when I first started. Tru story… Now let’s add the SELF-DEFENSE component of the program! Through this program, you’ll learn how to deal with hostile situations in which you may find yourself, and enable you to protect yourself using the techniques you’ve learned. We’ll teach you many of the essential Life Skills necessary, and in a short amount of time, to help you in becoming proficient at defending yourself against an attacker. In fact, most of the techniques and principles you learn go hand-in-hand with your body’s natural reaction to responses to threats and violence…this is what makes them easier to learn than most “martial arts” techniques. In the Cardio Self-Defense Program, you’ll learn the simple, effective and instinctive technique to help you: Be aware of your surroundings; Avoid getting hit; Deflect your attacker; Minimize the danger of an attack; Protect yourself and others; Inflict maximum possible damage to your opponent… The Self-Defense program is designed to help you end any conflict quickly. This does NOT mean that after 5 classes, you’ll be ready to go to battle and take on/win against any attacker or nut case who threatens you! But it does mean that by taking these classes, combined with time and persistent practice, you will learn how to protect yourself as best as you can. Sound body, sound mind, a sense of ability, fitness and strength will all be by-products of your training. If this is your goal, then the Cardio Self-Defense Training Class is perfect for you!
